How do I know my refinished cabinets won’t peel or chip?
This is one of the most important questions to ask any cabinet refinisher. A durable finish starts with proper surface preparation and adhesion, not simply purchasing an expensive coating. Existing contaminants and finishes must be properly addressed, surfaces need to be prepared correctly, and the coating system must be compatible with the substrate underneath it. At Blue Nile, we build our finishing process around those fundamentals because a beautiful final coat is only as good as the surface beneath it.
How long will I be without my kitchen during cabinet refinishing?
One of the biggest advantages of refinishing is that your existing kitchen stays in place. Cabinet doors and drawers are removed for preparation and finishing while the cabinet boxes are professionally prepared and finished on-site. Although access may be limited during portions of the project, refinishing avoids the demolition and reconstruction involved with a full cabinet replacement. Our process is organized to keep the project moving efficiently while still allowing the necessary preparation and curing time for a professional finish. Most projects take approximately 2 weeks to finish, but half of that time is spent off-site.
Will my house get dusty during cabinet refinishing?
Keeping your home clean and protected is a major part of our refinishing process. Before sanding begins, we isolate the work area and establish dust containment and negative air pressure to help prevent airborne sanding dust from traveling into the rest of your home. Floors, countertops, appliances, openings, and surrounding surfaces are carefully protected before work begins. Cabinet refinishing is an involved process, but the mess should stay in our workspace—not become yours.

This project required a meticulous process of spraying, high-grit sanding, leveling, inspecting, and respraying until the surface reached the level of refinement we were looking for. With lacquer, or indeed any fine coating, every imperfection matters. Each coat builds on the one beneath it, which means the quality of the final finish is determined by the work performed between coats, and before any paint touches the surface —not just the last pass of the spray gun.
That’s the difference between simply changing the color of a piece and professionally finishing it.
